NYPD Department Chief Jeffrey Maddrey resigned abruptly amid sexual misconduct allegations.
Jessica S. Tisch, the Police Commissioner accepted Jeffrey Maddrey’s resignation Friday night. It was effective immediately. NYPD will investigate the matter thoroughly. The NYPD takes sexual misconduct allegations seriously.
Maddrey, the New York City Police Department’s most senior uniformed officer and department chief since 2022, was the highest-ranking uniformed police officer in New York City.

NYPD Commissioner Appoints Interim Chiefs
Tisch named John Chell, NYPD Chief Patrol Officer, and Philip Rivera, Chief of Transportation as the interim chiefs of the department after Maddrey’s resignation.
Tisch stated, “The NYPD works tirelessly to protect New Yorkers and these roles are crucial to keeping our communities secure.” The interim Chiefs of Department and Patrol continue to lead efforts to reduce crime, maintain order, and build public confidence.”
Maddrey had been chief of patrol when then-Commissioner Keechant Sewell appointed him chief of the department.
